Letterpool
Letterpool is an award-winning community art project produced by Switch Media. In summer 2008, we issued a call for entries from the general public to send to us their favourite examples of type around Liverpool. The interest was phenomenal and within a month, we had accumulated hundreds of entries sent in via the post, email and by mobile phone mms. To celebrate how much the project had captured the public’s imagination, we decided to publish a book under Switch Media Press, which launched on Dec 1st 2009 titled “Letterpool: Urban Art and Architecture in Liverpool”.

Letterpool celebrates the typography and architecture of Liverpool through the names, signs, signals and street art that form the visual fabric of our city, exploring its colourful heritage and evolving cityscape through the words that give us language, meaning and identity.
A community-led art project, Letterpool issued an open invitation for people to send in their favourite examples of type – these are their responses.
The collection features hundreds of shots from both professional and amateur photographers. Bold, striking, evocative and humorous, Letterpool captures Liverpool’s creative language, from industrial and commercial signage to funky and artistic urban etchings.
